“If Bob Pittman’s judgment today is anywhere near as good as it was in
the early 1980s, he may be onto something with a new online video
Bob Pittman is the guy who allegedly “invented MTV.” Except he kinda didn’t. Just ask Mike Nesmith (yes, the guy from the Monkees) who had the idea for a network that shows videos before Pittman ever “invented” the notion.
Anyway, Pittman has been milking his “invention” for all its worth for over 2 decades now. His new “idea” is a YouTube ripoff. Oh, but it isn’t just a YouTube ripoff, you see. It’s a YouTube ripoff where experts pick the nuggets of gold from the vast pile of user-created video manure out there and present it to you.
I mean, why would you want a collection of millions of videos, most of which suck, yes, out of which you can choose the ones that amuse YOU when EXPERTS can decide what’s good FOR you?
If Pittman plays his cards right, this WeShow thing can be every bit as good as his last “invention,” MTV. And with that last sentence, I now declare the Internet officially dead.
Addendum: It is easier to invent things that have already been done than to come up with something original. ..Sort of like predicting the past … “Viral Videos” was or is a TV show that we’ve seen in the past. It was/is supposed to be the best of Internet videos as selected by the show’s producers. So… It’s been done. Now if you excuse me, I have to go invent the sitcom. — Ab Irato
